Portland Orthopaedics' Equator Plus Cup Launched in US
15 / 01 / 2007
First Implant of Portland's third product offering in Oregon, US
Portland Orthopaedics Limited (ASX:PLD) first series of Equator Plus Cups have been implanted in Portland, Oregon today. The Equator Plus will be the third product Portland has available in the USA and is Portland's second product release in the past 5 months following the successful launch of the M-COR stem in September 2006.
The Equator Plus launch and first implants are timely as the product will be available for exhibition at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons in San Diego from the 14th to the 18th of February 2007. The Academy has 24,000 members internationally and the Annual Meeting is the largest attended event in the US orthopaedics conference calendar.
The Equator Plus Cup is Portland's third product now available for sale in the US and is used for primary (first time) and revision (second time) hip replacement patients. Portland's Equator Plus hip cup is press fit into the pelvis and can be used with most other companies' hip replacement stems. The Equator Plus has the advantage that the polyethylene liner insert has a solid metal backing, which potentially prevents wear particles from escaping through the screw holes at the back of the cup. Hence Portland's product is expected to reduce the bone's exposure to wear particles and increase the life of the implant.
Portland now has products for use in both Primary and Revision surgery available for sale through its exclusive distributor, Plus Orthopedics Inc in the USA. Portland's production capabilities are currently being expanded and more surgeons are expected to commence using the product as inventory is made available.
