Euthymics Bioscience Gears Up With Management Appointments

20 / 08 / 2010

Euthymics Bioscience Inc., a clinical-stage company developing antidepressants, said Pierre Trân and Joan Manthis have been appointed as chief medical officer and director of clinical operations, respectively. Also joining the management team is William T. Pappafotopoulos as vice president of finance and administration.

Novartis Venture Funds and Venture Investors last month led a $24 million Series A round for Euthymics Bioscience, which formed to acquire DOV Pharma and to develop that company's treatment for major depression. GBS Venture Partners, Hambrecht & Quist Capital Management and State of Wisconsin Investment Board also participated in the round.

Trân served as global medical director of the joint antidepressant group at Eli Lilly and Co., where he was involved in the life-cycle management of fluoxetine (Prozac). After Lilly, he was senior vice president and CMO at XenoPort Inc., and most recently he served as CMO and VP, clinical development at Cortex Pharmaceuticals.

Prior to joining Euthymics, Manthis served as director of clinical operations at Orexigen Therapeutics Inc. Earlier in her career, she worked at Eli Lilly as senior clinical development associate.

Pappafotopoulos has been president and chief executive of the Milton Financial Group, founded in 1985, serving venture capital, bioscience and financial firms, among others. Prior to forming the Milton Financial Group, Pappafotopoulos held financial, accounting and management positions in Fortune 100 companies, including Johnson & Johnson and Raytheon, and in the government, at the Internal Revenue Service.

Euthymics Bioscience's drug candidate, EB-1010, is a novel, broad-spectrum monotherapy antidepressant intended for use by the estimated two-thirds of major depression patients who do not respond adequately to current treatments. Euthymics is preparing to initiate a Phase II/III clinical trial of EB-1010 in the first half of 2011.
